Challenge

As Nebraska Medicine continued to grow, a strategic decision was made to close its onsite hotel that was often used by patients and families. They were faced with reimagining the travel and lodging experience with the constraint of no on-campus lodging.

Approach

Nebraska Medicine knew that the most valuable, creative and relevant insights come from a human-centered approach. Cast & Hue used empathy-based qualitative research to uncover insights about the patient journey. Our work shed light on unmet patient needs, which guided journey mapping and became the focus of a collaborative workshop with patients and staff.

Outcome

Our workshop resulted in over 100 proposed solutions. The ideas ranged from providing late-arriving patients a bag of quarters to use in vending machines, to creating a community house where long-stay patients can cook, wash clothes and build community.

The design thinking solutions created during the patient workshop laid the foundation for the new Nebraska Medicine travel and lodging experience.

Cast & Hue came in and listened with empathy. They were curious. They talked to many different stakeholders, including families, staff, and patients. They were able to have a three-dimensional view of the challenges. They debunked a lot of the ideas and biases that we had.
